I agree that there has been a shift in the quality of jobs, and that is my big concern going forward: Its a structural change and will continue. On the Presidents, I think the impact is much bigger than you are giving credit for. Bush Jr with his tax cuts and wars had a profound effect which will impact way out after his Presidency, and Obama did quite a bit to combat the Great Recession sans much cooperation from Congress, and of course the ACA also impacts way out, and was not well thought through IMHO. The FED of course does as well, and you could say the FED under Greenspan contributed significantly to the buildup of problems leading into the housing recession. So individual players can have out-sized impacts because they set policy direction.

>>which was that Presidents aren't really the ones who control these things. Mostly, Presidents control the military and foreign policy, but they are just bit players in our economy. They tinker, but they don't really move the tanker, unless they have the personality to sway Congress.

I agree, unless the move toward "Imperial Presidency" that became such an issue under Obama, is not rolled back. The kickbacks to insurance companies paid with unappropriated funds was an insane outrage that simply cannot be tolerated. Essentially, it could permanently transfer economic control,to the presidency that heretofore was impermissible.
