Never saw that but Brando is in my favorite movie scene ever.

In "Sayonara," the first meeting between Major Gruver (Brando) and Hana Ogi (Miiko Taka) had me spellbound. You have no idea how this is going to go and Taka just steals the scene. I've never seen such grace on-screen and can't imagine ever seeing another such scene. What's amazing is that this was Taka's first movie appearance.

Something I really like about "Sayonara" is the historical accuracy of the film. A lot of people think it's a so-so film but I think they don't have a historical perspective - they're looking for something else. The issue of American-Japanese marriages in the Occupation years was very serious and large numbers of American servicemen were doing it. It is a fact that after the devastation of WW II, there was a million-man shortage of Japanese males between the ages of 20-35. This meant that a million Japanese women would be sentenced to a childless, single life in a culture where that was seen in very negative social terms. American men were a solution for many of them.
