Don't ask me why this country unites only when we want to bomb someone. I think that is part of the problem. Our patriotism is mostly skin deep. On the topic of socialism, consider this....a real world implementation of Socialism in Cuba. Every person gets $20 per month plus food ration cards. That's single payer...the government determines what you get for a standard salary. Consider it a Universal Basic Income. The government also owns all land in Cuba. Farming is a problem, though. The government has not been able to invest a lot in modern farming equipment, so farming is a mostly manual labor affair that is absolutely backbreaking work. So guess what? There aren't that many farmers and a lot of the land in Cuba remains undeveloped and the Cuban government has to import a lot of food that it otherwise would not have to, at GREATER expense than if they could just create the incentives for farmers to farm. Why is there no incentive? Because for $20 per month, most people will choose the jobs that are easiest, because they aren't going to get paid more for the jobs that are hardest. There is not price discovery in a Socialistic economy.

It is no different than in the Socialist programs we create right here in the US. Socialism distorts economics in ways that always lead to more poverty, not less. Capitalism engages the laws of supply, demand, risk, reward, and price discovery to most efficiently allocate capital and resources to where it is needed most. That is as basic as mathematics can get. That's why free market oriented economies are always wealthier than collectivist economies. Are there abuses in Capitalism? Absolutely, yes. That's why need the Gov't to be a strong guarantor of property rights and to have a strong and independent Judicial Branch. It's why we need a strong Legislative and Executive Branch to create laws that level the playing field and to prosecute fraud, criminal behavior, and corruption. Crony Capitalism is every bit as bad as Socialism and that is what we have today in the US.
