i think the divide between mandarin- and cantonese-speaking immigrants to canada, australia, ... is not a regional 'thing', but an 'us vs them' issue, along the lines of ...

- era of immigration - cantonese speakers ventured forth earlier

- economics - the late arrivals from the mainland are financially better off at the get-go

- refinement - the late arrivals are seen as uncouth, but actually may be more cultured as a group vs the early landed

- etc etc

- the frightening thing to early arrivals is the image that the later comers are

... wealthier
... nastier
... louder
... greedier
... etc etc

stereo typing, and which i do not find to be true on average, but that the late arrivals' are positioned more barbell-like at two extremes

one just need to veer towards one lobe of the barbell to engage, but engage one must
