My hunch is due to the higher interest rate outlook. Small companies tend to have less cash and need to borrow.

The RUT usually leads the market down. When folks get nervous they often sell the small stocks and buy the big stocks and current favorites. That seems to be what is happening now and if so that suggests a significant top is not far away.
