To my eternal regret I passed on an invite to go to China when it was first opening up, probably 1980.

A friend came back and related interesting stories. One involved an old man sitting in one spot for several days honing a piece of metal, probably a nail, on a stone, He was trying to fashion a part to repair a contraption on the ground beside him. The contraption had no case and it's purpose wasn't apparent. After some hours watching my friend determined the guy was trying to get his sewing machine going again.

That vignette was typical, illustrated the grinding poverty there then. I was told most all the populace was short, one indicator of malnutrition.

I think you've bought fanciful stories, not rooted in fact.
