I hope the overall market volatility is not what we'll be dealing with throughout the year.

Someone on CNBC was talking about the January effect the other day. He went on to talk about how the mood at the end of January generally will set the pace for the balance of the year.

According to his numbers: The future, year end results of the market can be determined by how well the market does in January. If the market is up at the end of January, it will finish up for the year. If it's down at the end of January, then the year will also finish down. This has proven true in 89% of the years they have tracked the DOW (about 101 years last I checked).

Someone else continued on and stated January's results are usually determined early as well. You guessed it - by the first week of full trading. So if this is accurate, were in for a rocky year in the major markets!

But who knows? I've heard analogies comparing market futures to superbowl results to the height of hem lines in womens dresses during certain years!

When does it end??
