Sun , TCI set news briefing PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan 9 (Reuters) - Sun Microsystems Inc scheduled a news teleconference with a Tele-Communications Inc (Nasdaq:TCOMA - news; Nasdaq:LBTYA - news) executive Friday in which industry sources said the companies will unveil a deal on the use of Java technology in set top boxes. Spokeswomen for Sun and its JavaSoft unit declined comment on the details of the announcement ahead of the call, which was scheduled for 1330 PST/2130 GMT. The move would be a coup for Sun, which has projected itself as a fierce rival of Microsoft Corp (Nasdaq:MSFT - news). Microsoft has been frequently reported to be striking a TCI deal of its own and to be preparing a $1 billion investment in TCI. The company said addressing the call would be Alan Baratz, president of Sun Microsystems Inc.'s JavaSoft unit, Sun Microelectronics President Chet Silvestri and Pruce Ravenel, president and chief executive of TCI.NET and a senior vice president of Tele-Communications Inc. Earlier, Sun CEO Scott McNealy would not comment on Sun's progress in talks with TCI and other cable television operators on an agreement under which they would use Sun's PersonalJava technology on new digital television set-top boxes. McNealy was interviewed by financial cable channel CNBC at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nev., where he was due to give a keynote address later in the day. The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported on Friday that Microsoft executives were ''upset'' Thursday to learn that TCI was close to signing a deal to use Sun's PersonalJava in addition to Windows CE. Microsoft CEO Bill Gates is due to present a keynote address of his own to the Las Vegas trade show on Saturday.
