Josh: I don’t think a name matters to the dog. You can call him “Hey you”. The dog doesn’t care.

It’s up to you to clue the dog in that whenever you use “Charlotte” or “Hey You”, she is supposed to pay attention. The type of attention you want to accommodate some sort of follow up command like stop, here, whatever. BTW, I’m a firm believer in “stop”. It’s the one command which tends to save a dog’s life. All other commands are basically just designed to make your life easier.

Back to name recognition ... An easy trick. Attach a long string / line to her collar and keep it in your hand. Let her mosey around. Inside / outside / doesn’t matter. Call her name. No reaction? Give it a firm tug. Reel her in if you have to while repeating her name.

You may have to do this a hundred times over the course of a few days. I can guarantee you that within a couple of days of doing this, you will have her full attention every time you call her name.
