Sadly, lots of Engineers tend that way, and they are generally fairly smart. The history of "creation science" and of course bashing AGW is filled with such characters. They are an embarrassment to my profession...

I think the conspiracy theorist is somewhat common to some degree among 'intellectuals' with ego. A conspiracy theory can be a way of displaying arcane data and thereby establishing intellectual superiority. Some of that on this thread perhaps.

Often goes hand in hand with a lack of academic credentials.
