Apple's market share went from 12% of a much smaller market to 4% of a much bigger market. [...] IMO the Mac base is still in place it just hasn't kept pace with the growth in the market.

Every single company that I personally know of switched from Mac to Wintel. That is a semi-random sample of about 10 Mac shops, ranging from a mom and pop operation, to tens of thousands of users (Motorola).

On top of that we could add all the ones that we read in the news, including schools, universities, NASA (what was the end of that story anyway?), two or three of the largest consulting firms, and on and on...

Of those who stayed loyal to the MacOS they flooded to the clone makers, showing their disatisfaction with Apple's high prices. So much so that Jobs killed the clones, even though they were willing to sign onto a contract with much higher licensing fees....
