China extends Video CD 2.0 standard

China. . . China's Ministry of Electronics Industry is extending the Video CD 2.0 standard that calls for adding Internet connectivity for the Chinese consumer-electronic products.

The China industry is proposing Video CD 3.0 and Super VCD as an extension of the current format. The proposed platform extensions may be rooted in home-market requirements, but Chinese officials see the potential for the specs to become a global standard for VCD players as the local industry sets its sights on the rest of Asia.

Dataquest Inc. estimates the final tally for this year's VCD player sales in China to double last year's total, with 15 million units expected to be sold by year's end. Of those products, 90 percent will have been produced and marketed by local manufacturers.

Super VCD is expected to provide higher resolution video while maintaining backward compatibility with Video CD 2.0.
