Dick, I am no a proponent of this solution by any means. But in a discussion over on the ASND thread about this topic about a month ago, someone pointed me toward some info that made this claim, and I overcame the very same mental objetion that you have expressed about dropping for incoming. Personally, I couldn't care less, as I have always believed "shotgun" was a solution looking for a problem - engineers sitting around saying "Hey we could do this", when no consumer would want to pay to do it that way in the first place.

"there are higher speed alternatives, like cable and xDSL, which seem like they'll be easier for most of us..."

For now those alternatives aren't available except in very few, limited areas. Cost is a consideration too - a 2nd line install charge plus monthly cost is small potatoes here in PacBell Land vs ISDN's installation charge plus monthly fee plus per minute charges. Some ISP's are cheap (relatively speaking) for ISDN for a single B channel but when you throw in a 2nd channel the story changes.

IF shotgun works and IF you've got clean copper to work with you MAY get over 100K service at a cost-effective rate.
