Not very long. So let me see, your solution is to stop all progress? Economics and technology are wedded together in a bond so tight, you will never separate them. You and others are the very definition of Luddite. The Luddites claimed the world would end for industrial workers because of automation too. Instead, our standard of living has continued to increase since then, precisely because of investments in technology. Has it ever occurred to all those liberals who are forever seeking utopia and a life without work that it will take technology like AI and ML to get even remotely close to that utopia? And yet, you want to stifle it? The answer is not to get in the way and stop it. The answer is like Musk and Hawking say, to channel it and make sure we don't create AI that can wipe out the human race. That's the more important danger. Already we have drones that can kill without human intervention. Imagine terrorists releasing drone swarms that are AI enabled to recognize moving humans and shoot to kill on sight or explode once they get within a crowd of people? That type of thing is coming and it will be terrifying, unless we start to figure out how to control AI just like we have attempted to keep nukes out of crazy people's hands like Kim Jong Un.
