Here is the explanation how the addition of Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland to the EU ended up becoming the PIGS. After 1982 sent the underdeveloped countries in a huge debt crisis, the Europeans needed market for their goods and services. They decided to include Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland in the EU. These backwaters were in worse shape than the countries in the debt crisis. At least the indebted countries suffering under Paul Volcker double digit interest rates, had resources. These countries did not. To enter the EU, they had to enact 80.000 laws so that they would toe the line as directed by the pre-existing members. Once they entered, the money flowed in. They could stop fishing and build roads to get the imports from the pre-existing EU members. And they started buildings roads and airports like crazy. After a few years of being called Europeans, they thought: Well, we are rich and Europeans. We are like the Germans! Well, as anyone knows a Portuguese, Irish or Spaniard is definitely not a German. They even started calling the Irish Celtic Tiger! Amigo, that thing was not going to end well. And it did not. The PIGS were still corrupt and had bad leadership than the pre-existing EU members. among one of the bad habits they have got from the EU members was the habit of subsidizing money losing enterprises. Thus, the olives of Catalonia. The PIGS went down and are still down. China thinks it is a rich country too...
