The transaction cost of spending a Bitcoin through a Bitcoin bank has increased greatly during periods of value instability for Bitcoin and is far higher now than it was last year. This chart is only complete to August 23, 2017. - mashable.com

In asking a Bitcoin Bank to convert a part of a Bitcoin into another currency they're taking a risk in taking the fractional Bitcoin off your hands until someone else wants it.

It's akin to specialists widening Bid and Ask spreads when they anticipate price volatility in a stock.

In the past when I've placed a Limit Order on a sale and watched the Bid move away from me and return when I cancel the order. In the past that's tipped me off to a huge tank in the market. I can't say the same will happen with Bitcoin but it's a worrying sign and for my Nephew makes him less interested in holding Bitcoins.
