In 1990, David Duke ran for the Senate as a Republican in Louisiana. He'd had a history of appearing in public in Klan robes and Nazi uniforms. The "So what if he's a Nazi?' argument didn't carry him across the finish line. The binary choice argument would have had Republicans embracing Duke. I don't think it's a shame Duke lost. This guy could've been the face of the Republican party for decades. Voting for candidates you know are bad has no bottom this side of hell.
