Don, thanks but I'll have to put this problem on hold because something else came up. Thanks to steve and Josh for their suggestions, too.

PS: I thought I had HDMI but it turns out the connector is not hooked up.

Don and Steve, I created a new user profile and the monitor displays in color again when signed in as that user. When signed in as me, it's grey scale.

the color loss in my admin account can be fixed here. It was set to grayscale
