Jan 09, 1998 (6:00 PM EST) - The Motley Fool Evening News

Wireless telecom services provider WinStar Communications (Nasdaq:WCII - news) gained $2 7/16 to $29 5/16 after the company announced that it is accelerating its rollout of Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) services, which will bring the company to a gross cash flow break-even point by the end of 1999. The company said it will be in 30 markets by the end of this year, one year ahead of schedule. With the faster rollout, the company expects negative cash flow to peak in Q4 1997 and to decline thereafter. WinStar is currently marketing its services in 15 metropolitan areas and will fund the rollout through its recent $175 million preferred stock offering. Salomon Smith Barney initiated coverage on the company with a "buy" rating, and analyst Jack Grubman cited WinStar's ability to deploy its network faster than wireline-based CLECs and its ownership of 38 Ghz licenses covering 125 markets as essential to the rating.

...can confirm Vogel tgt of 100...most Nations/Mont discussions are to their private clients NOT on the wires..this was to their exclusive private clients and sales force...OBV, on of the best TA indicator I know, has resumed an uptrend the last week after basing for 2 months...it usually leads price....I believe we will see a line order announcement this wk...interesting how the press (CNN, CNBC) accounted for price move in WCII 1/9/98 mostly based on press release on accel rollout, with nary a mention of Grubman report...my experience in the past is grubman's influence on an under followed stock like this is often 20% short term...he and D Rheingold at Merrill are the two telco alleged gurus, and people often listen, as well as energizing their retail sales force....srock closed strong as the mkt crumbled...Ric d, just curious, where did you see/hear Vogel comments?..Post or E mail me..Thanks...
