Respond to of 457966 LOL! Highway 17 from Santa Cruz to Los Gatos is truly the "Highway from Hell." It should have had a third lane (each way) added years ago, but the libtards in control in Santa Cruz wanted to discourage the "flatlanders" not to live over here and commute... However, they have made improvements to the road - banking, barriers, more shoulders. The biggest safety factor they did was add the barriers in the middle. Probably when you drove it, it was mostly no barriers between the two traffic directions - on tight, blind curves. And if you look at the history of the road, you will see that very early on, there was a train - well, when cars came into being, big money got rid of that. But as to right now: I despise the same things that you don't miss. The traffic, the taxes, the high cost of living. However, I didn't move back when I could have taken my children with me. Now my "children" are entrenched in their own lives and doing quite well here where the opportunities are almost limitless for those willing to get an education and work. So I do like most "native" Californian's do and adjust. Whenever we have to be on the road, the first thing we do is check Google Maps on our cell phone to see what traffic looks like. If needed, extra time is allowed - or sometimes even plans are changed. We pay more for almost everything - taxes, insurance, car licenses, gasoline, most groceries, etc. In exchange (in this area), we have almost perfect weather most of the time and no alligators. :) Here is a photo from 1905 showing the train that appears to run parallel with what is now Hwy17. This "curve" is now Laurel Curve, which makes over a 90 degree turn. Looks like they had 3 segments of bridge.
