Different translations use different wording in English. Would you prefer I use "sacred" and "dog" vs "unholy"?

It does NOT mean that we are to judge people as "dogs" or "pigs."

It DOES mean that we are to recognize profane people when we see them and hear them. Why else would he admonish us to not entrust sacred responsibilities to such people if we're not to recognize them?

it's all too easy to confuse judgment with discernment.

YES! And that's exactly what is being done by people saying we shouldn't recognize profane speech and action from the President when we see it and hear it.

Often people who use the Bible to excuse wickedness have a vested interest in confusing the two, and I didn't want to endorse that at all.

Exactly!

When we evaluate political leaders and candidates we aren't judging their eternal souls. We're looking at their actions, their words and their character traits. There is nothing wrong with discussing those things. In fact, as Christian citizens we should. By their fruits you shall know them.
