I can remember so many high level computer coders at Microsoft who knew absolutely nothing about computer hardware, they were using everyday. I view that as an indication of the progress the industry has made. When I started programming, HW was so limited that you had to know the details. Little things like should I pay the price of double precision floating point arithmetic or is single precision good enough? How can I squeeze this algorithm into my 64K overlay? I am so glad I don't have to think about those things any more.
