NEW YORK, Jan 9 (Reuters) - The Nasdaq Composite Index
tumbled more than 50 points on Friday in its second-biggest
point loss ever on investor fear that worsening Asian economic
conditions will damage U.S. companies' profits, traders said.
The index closed down 52.35 points -- or 3.37 percent -- at
1503.19 on volume of more than 815 million shares. Decliners
led advancers 3,555 to 1,100.
"It was just a general meltdown in all the tech stocks,"
one trader said. "I hope we got it all out today so we can come
back and have another look Monday."
The drop began with the opening bell following a profit
warning by computer-component supplier Adaptec Inc
that spooked technology investors.
Adaptec, the index's most-active issue, fell more than 40
percent, losing 14-6/16 to 21-9/16.
Other losers included bellwethers Intel Corp ,
which fell 2-7/16 to 71-7/8, and Oracle Corp , which
dropped 1-9/16 to 18-3/4.
Dell Computer Corp lost 3 to 83-3/16, Microsoft
Corp lost 3-1/2 to 127 and Cisco Systems lost 1-7/8 to
54-1/4. Applied Materials fell 1-/5/16 to 28.
