Dulane U. Ponder. RE: "Do you know whether her (Abby Cohen) appearance was pre-recorded or if last night's show was live (after the big slump)?

It was live (always is). She was unfazed by the big drop when looking at the long term. She compared the US economy to a "super tanker". It would take more than the Asia thing to throw it off course. Everything else (low inflation, good employment, consumer optimism) is on course. She predicted that earnings of the S&P 500 would be up 8% in 1998 (after a 12% jump in 1997). Based on this she projected the Dow at 8700 for 1998.

She has always been conservative in her projections and has always made a distinction as she did after the big Oct drop between a "market event" and an "economic event". I believe she would consider Friday a "market event" and one which gives long term investors "interesting opportunities."

Dulane, When I was finally able to get back on SI .. I saw a message that a hacker had broken into the system, but no harm done, just an inconvienience.. I agree with your comments about the media.. they have this Headline mentality to try to sell their papers.. CNBC is no different than the rest, but they do have some public service value with the tickers and dow bugs, etc.
The weather here in Honolulu has been ho hum paradise type weather.. I love it and makes for an easy retirement... no stress.
Look in your TV guide Louis Rukeyser is supposed to have a special with some famous CEO's today or tonight... I know its on PBS here in Hawaii at 9 pm Sat. today.... have a great week end.
