It will be interesting to see if there's been a relative change over time in the abundance of methylphosphonate synthase (MPnS) creating ocean bacteria like Pelagibacter ubique - and if so what's driving it.

I suspect it's likely the diversity between HEPD and MPnS using organisms has been there all along but no one had a reason to discover the metabolic different until now.
