For fire starting (or coffee heating) in Nam we used a small chunk of C-4 touched by a lit cigarette.
Be sure it is the white C-4 and not the old stinky yellow C-3.

For fire starting here, I like to use 2 or 3 pieces from a plastic baggy of cotton balls previously dipped in vaseline and when ready to use, taken out of the bag, and touched by a cigarette lighter or match.

If you have no matches or a magnesium stick, then a small piece of steel wool and two small batteries over some finely shaved tinder works like magic... that steel wool ignites immediately when touched by those little batteries...
