Grommit, I've read the FIFO requirement was excluded from the final version of the tax bill.

If I had to pay taxes on my 2017 income using the new 2018 tax rules, I believe I would have a tax increase on about $3000 of income that I couldn't exlude under the new rules.

Lot of talk that the standard deduction goes to $24K from $12K. Not so much talk that I hear that the personal exemption ($4050) goes away. For a family of four (joint filers), who don't itemize, that results in an additional $12K (12k to 24k) that doesn't have to be taxed, but (4x$4050) = $16k that does.

I believe stock sales rule (aka lot based accounting) stays as is. Mandating FIFO really screws the buy and hold investor. So all is still good.

This was posted on the SI Income thread. Very positive for investors w/ long term capital gains and qualified dividend income. I am hunting for value dividend payers and will pay a bit for growth. I have no problem holding over a year or more either.

I still do lot based accounting so I can harvest my losses (typically my high cost shares in a value Buy & hold) as many times I am too early on my buys. However, more than 70% of the time, I end up w/ excellent gains holding 18-24 months as value typically gets noticed by the market.

Happy Solstice & New Year . . .
