I tryed not to be carried away with a brief statement> ggg To Whom it may concern: After two years researching the Internet, studying the Tele-Act of 96, it seems only fair (long term) that we let the plan "IN PLACE" have a chance to work. Here is what I see happening and how the 96 Act has and will help competition throughout the Telephone and Telephony sectors. As we all know, the long distance companies and the local bells are trying desperately to get into each others market. With that said, it is evident in the news releases, most LD & Local Bells are heading into the Telephony/Internet side. 1. Since the Internet is not taxed at this time, won't it be to the advantage of both Local and Long Distance Companies to use Internet Telephony? 2. With the label "enhanced service provider", won't this alone bring on more and better competition. Therefore, bring down the prices for all business and personal use? 3. Why burden a Sector with TAX that is still in its infancy? 4. At this particular time, there is neither the need for taxing ISP's nor the justification. Most ISP's cannot afford this burden, and it will affect all communities that have yet been unable to afford Internet connection. Yes, the Telco's do have a point. But is their point a fair assessment at this particular time in the early stages of the Internet? I say not, and let them SWITCH, rather than FIGHT! Its only been within the last year that we have seen much more competitive prices from the Telco's, and now some have decided to SWITCH instead of fight the Internet. LET THE INTERNET ALONE.... for the next few years with major players getting more involved in buyouts and mergers without losing a drastic number of SMALL ISP's because this would definitely happen. It doesn't take much to notice that the Telco's will make up the lost revenue within the Telephony Sector, give it 3 more years and it will make all the difference with the sweeping changes that are taking place on both sides! LEAVE IT ALONE FOR NOW! Sincerely, Stephen B. Temple
