You are definitely right: <<am fairly certain that many shall perish so that a few may rise,>> The ratio of successful DNA to perishable DNA that exists to enable the successful is about 0.00000000001% [give or take a few orders of magnitude]. The rest is just supporting cast to enable the few to rise.

At first glance, one would think a superlative human is much more valuable than a sars virus, but Dr Urbani went into battle with it and lost. Nature is red in tooth and claw and there are niches for all sorts. Having a fine mind and high horsepower brain is not much protection when push comes to shove. One can easily find one was just supporting cast in the battle for DNA supremacy.
