I think the idea is that one's investments would have changed with the market--you might, for example, have bought the Dow. Inflation is of course a factor, but at least the best studies on this stuff take it into account. (And of course if you'd just kept a bank account, then what?)

Trouble is, I think most brokers selling the market to their clients have an imperfect understanding of what has happened, and what can happen. Short term does, after all, count. Look at Niederhoffer...
