This is one of the main themes of my discussions with TJ: China is desperate to guarantee resources. I tried to explain to him that the US in its growth era, had itself and Canada as natural resources. China has to go get these resources faraway from its shores and negotiating with unsavory governments. The Venezuelan default is one of the outcomes.

Saddam Hussein wouldn't necessarily agree. Syria objected to the USA invasion even though it was supposed to kill ISIS. Syria was happy to have Russia help kill ISIS. Maybe the real reason for the USA invasion was something else. USA paradoxically has an opinion about Russia helping eastern Ukrainians and keeping Crimea out of NATOs nasty clutches. Mqurice
