"But what happens to those of us in between? What about those of us too rich for Medicaid and food stamps, but too poor for tax shelters and lobbyists?

I hate to break it to you, but most people are too rich for help, and too poor for shelters, other than IRAs/401s. Most of us were where you are, when we were first getting started.

What about those of us who will never get unionized public-sector jobs, and are trying to improve our lot through self-employment and small-scale entrepreneurship?
There's more than one way to improve your lot. Have you thought about getting a private sector job (either union or non-union), instead of working for yourself?

"What about the single parent who wants to break the cycle of intergenerational welfare dependency and raise her children to be self-sufficient?"

Get vocational training or necessary education thru community colleges and various government programs, take advantage of whatever government child-care programs are available, and then get a job, become self-sufficient, and teach your children by example.

"working longer hours ...result in paying more taxes"
No shit? You know why? Working longer hours gives you a bigger income. Did you notice that your income went up? Mine always did, by quite a bit.

The self employment tax is for SS and Medicare, and includes the share paid by the employer, as well as the employee. If you worked for somebody, your taxes would be cut in half.
