And Syria and Okinawa and a lot more besides.

A good test of reality is to ignore paperwork and other theoretical "ownership" documentation and consider the reality of 3D physical presence.

For example, a couple of decades ago a nephew was complaining about wealth and rich people and power and such like. He was about 19 years old and had contributed nothing much to the world.

We were driving in my Castrol company car over Newmarket viaduct with a cellphone in the car. I was doing the driving.

Apart from paperwork and legal documentation of official ownership, he had use of a car, cellphone, my services, a motorway viaduct and all of New Zealand assets such as radio stations, emergency services and what have you. He didn t have to pay anything to use them. But he was whining "Woe is me I don't own stuff". Technically he didn't but if he owned it all and I was a serf it would have looked the same.

Similarly with USA soldiers blundering around in foreign lands killing sundry local yokels and generally bossing people around or even just hanging out without being obnoxious. The technical detail of the theoretical legal position is academic. It looks exactly the same as if they own it.

Compared with the great and amazing British Empire which gave ownership of the whole empire to the local yokels, the Americans give no such rights and even do a bit of rendition without habeas corpus and other great British laws.

Can the Iraqis arrest and imprison any naughty Americans they consider have broken their rules? That shows who is in charge.
