What would you have these strong backed active girls/boys do for a living? As I was writing that, I was picturing him fighting fires in California. But what you mention is a problem beyond the signaling problem. Sending him to college exacerbates the signaling problem without making a dent in the serious problem you bring up. It's a terrible misallocation of resources.
