Berkeley and other popular former seats of free speech have become "Free Speech, as long as we approve." Many of the large universities, the Ivies, the others, have simply shut it down. I recall attending, in about 1972, a speeches by Julian Bond and Andrew Young. Our small auditorium was packed to the rafters. Standing room only. It was probably 90% white, of course, since there were few black students at the school then. But South Arkansas whites did not turn away from free speech at that time. Not like Berkeley and other universities (notably in Calif, but not solely) are today.
