Compaq to augment Armada notebook lines

Compaq Computer Corp. Monday will add new models to each of its four Armada notebook lines, according to sources close to the company.
The Houston PC heavyweight is expected to announce eight new models, some including Intel Corp.'s new mobile 266MHz Pentium Processor with MMX Technology, which is also slated to be announced on Monday. Other models will feature a Compaq-engineered version of ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) power management.

Compaq will augment its high-end Armada 7700 line with the new 7792DMT, a unit based on the 266MHz Pentium MMX processor. Configured with a 13.3-inch XGA screen, 32MB of RAM, a 5GB hard drive, 20-speed CD-ROM and integrated 56K-bps modem, the notebook will be priced at $5,699, sources said. It is slated to ship next month.

Compaq's thin-and-light Armada 7300 line will be refreshed with the 7380DMT, a 266MHz system featuring a 12.1-inch XGA screen, 32MB of RAM, 4GB hard drive and 56K-bps modem. The unit, to be available immediately, will be priced at $4,999, sources said.

Also expected to debut are two new Armada 1500 models. The 1560DM, priced at $2,499, will feature a 166MHz Pentium MMX processor, 12.1-inch SVGA screen, 32MB of RAM, 3.2GB hard drive and 20-speed CD-ROM, sources said. Available immediately, it will be priced at $2,499.

The Armada 1592DM, meanwhile, will be configured with a 233MHz Pentium MMX processor and a Universal Serial Bus port. The notebook will be priced at $3,899, sources said. It also will be available immediately.

New models in Compaq's Armada 4200 line (previously the Armada 4100 family) will support ACPI, which will give them a single-battery life of up to 4 hours, sources said.

The Armada 4220T, priced at $3,999, will feature the 266MHz Pentium MMX processor, a 12.1-inch SVGA display, 32MB of RAM and a 4GB hard drive.

The Armada 4210T, priced at $3,499, will be configured with a 233MHz Pentium MMX processor, sources said.

Both units will be available immediately.

Compaq plans to roll out ACPI for all of its notebooks as it refreshes each product line, sources said. That means systems based on Intel Corp.'s forthcoming mobile Pentium II processors (code-named Deschutes) will have an additional level of power management.

Both of the new Compaq 7000 series notebooks will be available with Windows NT 4.0, sources said.

Carl - Re: Positive Outlook for Intel - FROM MOSCOW!

Wow! I think I'll reserve judgement - considering the "source"!
