Unveiling its business plan for this year, the company said it expects a surge in exports to more than offset the expected slowdown in domestic sales growth, fueling steady revenue increase. The company estimated last year's turnover at 1.9 trillion won, a whopping 130 percent growth from the 824.4 billion won in 1996. The company's extraordinary revenue growth came mostly from its supply of PCS equipment and handsets to LG Telecom. On the export front, it supplied $45 million worth of cellular systems and netted handset supply contracts totaling 300,000 units or $120 million. This year, the company hopes exports of CDMA (code division multiple access) handsets to multiply by several times, since the new cellular technology will be broadly implemented in the United States, Latin American and Southeast Asian countries. Company officials said exports revenues will account for at least 10 percent of the company's total turnover this year, which they expected to reach well over two trillion won. Meanwhile, the company's new president, Suh Pyoung-won, who had till recently served as chief technology officer of LG Electronics, created a globalization division to beef up the company's overseas marketing capabilities. He also put emphasis on securing world-class technologies and improving profitability and cash flow at a time of financial crunch.
