Leif, would you please list the things in the open literature which should tell me to worry with good reason about Qualcomm and my investment? Maybe just the most worrying 4 things. I really want to know. Maybe I'm blinded by Qualcomm's success. There are nearly 10 million handsets being used now, from what I can gather highly successfully.

What should I worry about?

You rightly point out that Ericsson has great need to succeed with CDMA, but need is far different from success. Qualcomm has working CDMA now, out in the market for all to see. Ericsson has nothing.

To say it is ludicrous to suggest Ericsson is producing vaporware is not much in the way of reasoning. I've suggested it. I've pointed out the reasons I believe they benefit from doing so. Daniel has tried to refute the points. I don't think successfully, but maybe you do. Perhaps unworthy of response, but I'm sure if there was any evidence of Ericsson's ability to produce CDMA in a handset, they would be proving the positive by handing it out to be tried. Now THAT would put the kibosh on Qualcomm.

Real factors affecting Ericsson stock? You think cdmaOne is not a real factor? I'd say competitor action is the major factor affecting a stock usually. It is very direct competition at that.

It is in both Ericsson and Qualcomm SI shareholder interests to figure out the relative positions. I'm not here to defend Qualcomm, I'm here to protect my investments and see if competitors to Qualcomm might be able to come up with the goods.

Leif: <<I suggest that the Q fans take a more critical view of their own company since it is there that they have their money invested (If half of the things I read in the open literature are true, you have real reason to worry.) and that the Ericsson stockholders spend their time discussing real factors affecting Ericsson stock like the upcoming final vote for the next European standard and the impact of the Asian crisis.>>

Good suggestion all the way around. It has always struck me as at least a little bit curious that Q supporters seem to feel compelled to run over to the Ericy board and let the shareholders know what a crappy company Ericsson is. I've usually considered drum beating to be a warning signal rather than an inducement when it comes to investments. To each thier own.

We have all been around the block enough times to know that "great technology" does not always make for a great investment. A quick glance at a five year chart shows that Ericy has been an excellent investment over that time frame, while Q is currently selling for a few points higher than it was in the fourth quarter of 1993. Is there really anybody who would say they'd rather have had their money in Q than in Ericy over this time period?

Most truly great companies seem to be continue to be great companies over the long run. The future may be different. As such, I also hold a little Q to round things out. Ericy will do just fine, IMO.

"One thing's for certain, we'll all find out!" ; )

Good luck.
