Mindmeld,
Rather, equality of opportunity should be the goal.
You see, from a liberal perspective, we can never achieve equality of opportunity as long as there are rich people who can use their wealth to "create opportunities" for themselves.

What opportunities does a poor person have, growing up in the ghetto, with a skin color that makes the authorities and passerbys automatically assume they are trash?

That's why we need big government, according to liberals, to make up for these inequalities. And the best way for government to equalize opportunity is to equalize outcomes.
The problem is that the GOP has just as many issues, some of them are similar.
As much as liberals, especially in the media, think otherwise, the truth is that the GOP is in a defensive posture. The assault on traditional values is coming from the left, and it is ongoing, even with Trump as president.

I believe this is the reason why the GOP, in trying to combat the left, often resorts to the same mentality as the left. Big government, postmodernism, moral relativism, all traits that define the left but have also worked their way into the GOP.
