james, never let tax considerations guide your investing. do what you feel is right from an investing standpoint. remember, you can sell in percentages to reduce risk w/o selling everything.

I realize that your question is rhetorical, and certainly, I would not presume to answer the S& P 500 question. What I do know is that the crash in Asia happened so quickly, so ruthlessly and so ruinously that few were able to duck. There is a lesson in that fact.

I find it amazing that market participants are not thoroughly spooked over the fact that it was the same experts who were touting the glories of Asian investment a few months ago, who are now suggesting that the Asian crisis will have little impact over here.

In making your decision, I know that you will keep the basic rule in mind.......don't lose your capital.
