No denying that. There are other factors of course.

The best tennis player in 18th century with all the his ambition and hard work could not be much richer than a weaker player of those days. Today, Roger Federer can be 100 times as rich as an average tennis player. . Because it has taken 300 years of viewer interest, sports organization, and mass media to build the "tennis assets".
