It's also true that during this century Italy went through every sort of political change, including total defeat, and France suffered military occupation and many successions of governments (and near-civil war in the 1950s). They also both lost a lot in World War I, though technically on the winning side. Not until the 1960s did they begin to enter into something resembling the stability of the United States.

So anything one says about making money in a stock market presupposes some degree of economic and political stability.

As you and I know, "investors" in the last five years have benefitted from an incredible la-la-land where everything has gone right.
