Vanni, I think Rocky Reid on the Iomega thread knows
a lot about home recording studios.

Wow, what made you ask me about audio gear? As it so happens, I've been working with pro/semi-pro level audio gear for a few decades; did the audio for a number of CD-ROMs including Mix Magazine's "Prestige Studios of the World" (a QTVR tour of the world's top SSL studios), and the 20th Anniversary Macintosh disc. I also worked with EMU testing E4 prototypes.

I'm using Deck and Studio Vision but there a ton of different ways you can go-ADAT, self-contained units (VS880), MIDI/Audio software (Emagic's Logic), or card-based systems (DigiDesign's AudioMedia). Your decision will be based on a lot factors:

1. Will you be swapping files with several different people?
2. Do you work in a self-contained environment (a singer/songwriter MIDI suite)?
3. Do you use a heavy mix of virtual tracking (via sequenced MIDI tracks) with a lot of digital audio?
4. Do you already have a ton of outboard gear for FX processing or will you be using software FX (Waves plug-ins).
5. Are you currently using any analog tape-based multitrax (Fostex R8)?
6. Are you doing album material, or CD-ROM stuff, or commercial spots?
7. What's your budget?(!)

These are just a few of the issues. You are most welcome to email me: bill@magneticdiary.com

You should probably chill on this for a few weeks until NAMM show is over because Roland is coming out with something that will surprise you. Unfortunately, I'm under obligation to not discuss it until February 7th.

Market: my own opinion is that the Asian thing isn't over yet. I hear more and more people whine about deflation, lack of demand, and excessive product inventories. On the flip-side, I see economists insisting that we still have a lot of strength in the domestic economy.

The 'January effect' this year will be much less pronounced than it was last year. We'll be sideways, not very up or down until March. Last week and next, some individual stocks were/will be punished harder than they deserve. Prime case is Adaptec where I completely lost my shorts last Friday. But I see a bounce back on that one over the course of 90 or 120 days.

And to top it off&#151&#151I'm often wrong.
