Excerpts from Prudential's Closing Market Commentary (1/12):

"The tough early going was influenced by the Asian contagion with Hong Kong absorbing an 8.7% decline after investment bank Peregrine Holdings filed for bankruptcy. However, other parts of Asia steadied with Indonesia and South Korea upticking. Moreover, sentiment was aided by two prominent Wall Street gurus. Abbey Cohen, Strategist for Goldman Sachs, told the Wall Street Week Show that there was room to Dow 8700 this year while Morgan strategist Byron Wein told CNBC that the S&P 500 was now 5% undervalued when arrayed against fixed-income alternatives.

Wall Street was also alert to the arrival of fourth-quarter results. Motorola is expected to report after the close today, while Intel will be out after the close tomorrow. Motorola fell back fractionally, while Intel gained close to four points...."
