Those were different times. Most people were racist in those days, but the southern racists were even worse with legal segregation.

But we are making headway in that at least racists now know it is wrong and don't defend it. Too many still quietly cling to it, but not openly.

That is progress.

FDR was a New Yorker and Wilson, who segregated the military, was from NJ. Both progressives. So, while a core of the Democratic party were Dixie, the party itself was national.
