Re: 7% inclusion rate at retail

The survey discussed earlier tells us the percentage of models on display at retail have built-in Zip drives. What it doesn't tell us is the percentage of systems SOLD with built-in Zip drives.

If the units with Zips are the most popular ones, then the inclusion rate could be a lot better than 7 percent of units sold. Compaq reported that the 4784, their first Zip model, was the biggest seller in that line. They have continued to put Zip in only one model of each line, but that model has always been the one priced right at the "sweet spot."

Other companies, like Gateway, have chosen to make Zip optional across their lines. But this is done only to allow them to advertize a slightly lower price for a system, then to boost the sale "at the checkout counter," by including the Zip as a reasonably priced add-on.

Good, looks like IOM's doing well with the post-Christmas new computer models!!

This month is very important for the future of Zip, or at least a good indication of things to come.
