A side effect of our for-profit healthcare system is that you will get the care you pay for, and if that means popping a lot of painkillers so you fill no pain (at least in the short term) then so it will be. I cannot think of a way to fix this. You cannot supervise every doctor and every prescription. And it is hard to fault a doctor for being responsive to the patient's needs and wants. Maybe when/if we have centralized med records and if/when privacy concerns can be managed, then an AI can keep track of each patient's meds and alert the doctor to potential issues.
