Gun owners drove off man who shot a former employer in the face:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police have taken a suspect into custody after the owner of a Nashville business was shot in the face by a former employee.

The incident was reported around 10 a.m. Thursday on Darbytown Drive, located not far from Old Hickory Boulevard and Dickerson Pike.

Metro Police said the ordeal began at Resolution Inc. after a suspect, identified as 62-year-old Ronald Kirby, confronted and then shot an employee, who was his former boss, in the face.

— Metro Nashville PD (@MNPDNashville) January 11, 2018The victim, identified as 59-year-old Ronald Francis, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where officials said his condition was not life-threatening.

The gunfire was in close proximity to another nearby business. Eric Kitts heard the gunfire from outside Broadband Technical Resources.

"I didn't have my phone on me," said Kitts. "So, I ran into my office and told them to call 911. We actually had some guys in the parking lot and we were trying to get them inside. Then about 10 seconds later we heard about four or five gunshots, really loud ones and apparently that was the people in there that had firearms they were shooting back at him."

Police said another employee at the Resolutions Inc. fired his weapon in retaliation, but Kirby wasn't hit. A third employee was struck in the chin by one of the ricocheting bullets. The wound was confirmed to be minor. He was treated at Skyline Medical Center.

The suspect ran from the building to a nearby Dollar General store and was found hiding in a storage area. Metro Police spokesperson Don Aaron said he never threatened SWAT officers and acknowledged that he was hiding there. His pistol was recovered from beside him.

Dickerson Pike was blocked off by police activity. Officers also surrounded a home in the Bellshire neighborhood. Several schools were placed on lockdown while the investigation was taking place.

Aaron said Kirby did not have a criminal history. He did have an accidental shooting charge back in October 2017.

Thursday afternoon, police confirmed Kirby was charged with attempted murder and three counts of aggravated assault. Authorities said he was refusing to answer questions from detectives.

When Self-Defense Use Of A Firearm Doesn’t Get Reported

Posted at 2:00 pm on January 4, 2018 by Tom Knighton

On Wednesday, Erika posted a story about how many times a firearm was used to stop a crime in November. It’s an interesting post that shows a handful of the law-abiding people who use a firearm to defend themselves all the time.

However, it gives the count as 22 people. Is that right?

Yes and no. As Erika notes in her post, these are just the people who used a firearm in public. Those are the people who we know about.

What we don’t think about are all the uses that occur with almost no one being any the wiser. You see, there are countless cases of people being afraid for their lives and pulling a firearm, but it never shows up in any official statistics.

For example, take a man and a woman walking on a city street. It’s night and not particularly crowded, but fairly well lit and they believe they’re safe. Then a thug shows up with a knife, demanding their valuables. The man draws a 9mm handgun, causing said thug to recognize that he has committed the age-old sin of bringing a knife to a gunfight. At this point, the thug runs like Lena Dunham when someone yells “CAKE!”

Sure, the couple calls the police and a statement is taken. They might even catch the thief. But their defensive use of a firearm never shows up on official statistics.

Another example is the hunter who uses his deer rifle to scare off a mountain lion that threatens him in the woods. Or how about the father taking his kids for a walk when they’re menaced by wild dogs, prompting him to fire at them?

These are defensive uses of a firearm. These are all cases of an individual using a lawfully owned firearm to defend their lives or the life of another, yet it doesn’t make lists. In the case of those dealing with wild animals, it may never even be reported.

While the gun grabbers are very fond of claiming we should try gun control, citing, “if it saves just one life” as if it were some magical mantra, they forget that we need balance. What good is saving one life if it costs you two?

Yet every year, many times more lives are saved with guns than are taken with them. This is true with even the most conservative estimate of defensive gun uses, which claims onlyhappens 108,000 times annually. And yes, that’s still almost three times more than the number of deaths attributed to firearms by anti-gunners, a number that’s artificially inflated by lumping suicides in with homicides and accidental deaths.

Most people who use a firearm defensively never show up in hard data. Yet there are far more of them every year that those who we lose to homicides. They’re never counted and easily dismissed by the anti-gun crusaders. That means we–and yes, I’m one of that number–owe it not just to ourselves but our fellow citizens to remind people that we exist, even if we never show up on such lists.

A woman walking her dog in Sterling Heights, Michigan was able to scare off her attacker by pulling out her concealed firearm (via Fox 32 Chicago).

........ Police say she noticed a man get out of the van on the other side of the street and started walking parallel to her. Feeling uneasy, the woman, who is in her 40s, and a CPL holder, says she immediately put her hand on her gun that was hidden under her jacket.

Keeping her eye on the man, and continuing to hold her gun, she got to the end of the street and the suspect disappeared. But then not even a minute later, that’s when he came toward her.

“He grabbed the back of her jacket and tried to grab her and pull her towards him,” [Sterling Heights Police Chief Dale] Dwojakowski said.

The woman says she saw the man holding something shiny, possibly a knife.

“She put the gun into the suspect’s stomach and said, ‘I don’t want to kill you,'” Dwojakowski said.

Police say the man appeared shocked and quickly ran off.

A Louisiana man held a police chase suspect, who turned out to be an MS-13 gang member, at gunpoint until officers arrived (via KBMT-TV).

On Sunday around 9:15 a.m., Vidor Police were notified that the Louisiana State Patrol was chasing a Black Acura at speeds over 100 miles per hour.

The Vidor Police Department says 22-year-old Diego Gomez tried stealing a second vehicle after stop sticks took out his car near the 855B off ramp.

Jami Alford was in the passenger seat when the suspect tried to steal their truck.

“We started seeing this black Acura coming towards us and it was smoking really bad,” Alford said.

“We were pulling over to get out of the way and he pulled in behind us, he jumped out of the car and jumped in the bed of the truck. And then my husband jumped out of the truck and held him at gunpoint until police officers pulled up,” Alford said.

Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll says Gomez is a member of the MS-13 gang.

According to Chief Carroll, the Vidor Police Department and Texas DPS troopers deployed tasers while Alford’s husband held the man at gunpoint. Gomez ripped the first set of prongs out and was attempting to fight officers. Gomez was placed into cuffs after the struggle.

Manion missed. A San Antonio Police Department spokesman, Officer Doug Greene, confirmed that detectives believe the suspect who fled the Dollar General that night was Andres Herrera, 19, who was killed a week later at Popeyes. . . .

Manion, 65, himself the father of three grown children, has had his concealed-carry license about seven years. He, too, said he only fired when he felt certain the robber was endangering the life of the Dollar General cashier and other shoppers.

Gas station clerk caught in shootout speaks out about ordeal

Gas station clerk talks to ABC13 about his terrifying ordeal. (KTRK)

By Erica Simon

Wednesday, November 15, 2017

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) --
The gas station clerk caught in a shootout in north Houston is speaking out about the terrifying ordeal.

The shooting happened on West Little York over the weekend.

"He pointed the gun and said, 'Lay down, lay down.' I had no idea what they were doing," Mohammed Kahloon explained.

In the surveillance video, you can see Kahloon open fire on two attempted robbers, even after he was struck in the arm.

We got a chance to see those injuries in person.

"Five on this side, one on the bottom and one on the right side. That's six and seven," he said.

That's not all. In addition to bullet wounds, Kahloon got hit in the mouth and had a tooth knocked out.

The suspects got away empty-handed, but one of them, Jarrell Farve, had been shot. He was found in a ditch a short distance away -- dead from a gunshot wound.

"Did you know you had shot and made contact with the suspect right away?" Eyewitness News Reporter Erica Simon asked.

"No, I didn't know," Kahloon replied.

ABC13 tried contacting Favre's family, but couldn't get anyone. As for Kahloon, he'll be ginger and sore for a bit, but he plans to go back to work with some security changes.

"Do certain things differently as we would in other circumstances and within our capability. (I'm) blessed, alive and well. Thank God," he said.

Blotter: Woman's stepfather defends her with licensed pistol

A day-long feud between roommates ended Sunday when the female victim's stepfather pulled his licensed pistol on the suspect in self-defense, according to Denton police spokesman Shane Kizer.

The suspect, 31-year-old Chad Knapp, was taken to Denton City Jail on charges of assault causing bodily injury and deadly conduct.

The fight started at about 3 a.m. Sunday at an apartment in the 900 block of North Austin Street, where police said Knapp and the 23-year-old victim lived. Kizer said the man had taken some of the woman's Adderall pills, which are used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy.

Police said the man was kicking and throwing things before he tried to leave the apartment through a back window with the pills. The woman followed the man to the front of the apartment as Knapp got into his vehicle.

The woman, Kizer said, tried to grab the medication in the car when the suspect "pushed her so hard that she was thrown backward into a brick wall," he said. When she fell to the ground, the man pulled out of the parking lot and started to drive away. A nearby witness then jumped onto the hood of his car to stop him, Kizer said.

The witness fell off the car when the suspect turned onto a nearby street. She suffered a small abrasion on her hand, Kizer said.

The victim was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, where police noticed bruises on the woman's arm consistent with someone grabbing her. Her head was hurting, Kizer said, and she suffered several abrasions or her back.

After she was released from the hospital, the woman returned to the complex at about 8 p.m. with her stepfather, who had a license to carry a concealed weapon. She forgot her apartment key, and she was trying to open the door when the suspect approached her with a hammer, Kizer said.

The suspect, Kizer said, was "yelling and cussing"and holding the hammer when the victim's stepfather pulled out his pistol. The suspect later told police that a man broke in his door and put a gun to his face, denying any physical altercation earlier in the day, police said.

Knapp was arrested and taken to Denton City Jail.

Good Samaritan pulls out AK-47 to try to stop robbery, shot five times
Police are still searching for the suspects.

Author: Catherine Park, Kristen Reed

ATLANTA - Atlanta police are investigating after a shootout at a Texaco gas station in west Atlanta.

The shooting happened on the 2700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to police, a man, who was not an employee, was cleaning up outside the gas station when three men approached him and attempted to rob him.

A bystander who was filling up gas at the time told police he saw three men approach him.

"The victim said that he observed three black males get out of a white vehicle and attempt to rob a guy on the corner," Captain Brian Schiffbauer said.

That's when he intervened and tried to stop the attempted robbery. Police said he pulled out his AK-47 to defend the other man.

One of them got out of the car, went inside to buy something and returned to the car, a gas station clerk told police.

“That same suspect then went over to a citizen hanging out in front of the gas station and he appeared to be trying to rob him,” Brown said.

The man . . . intervened when he saw what was going on, and “the suspect opened fire” on him, Brown said.

He was injured in the torso, buttocks and hip, according to Channel 2.

At that point, the man returned fire, leading the robber to get back inside the car and drive away, according to police.

The hero’s father told Channel 2 his son has five daughters ages 5 to 11. . . .

An AK-47 and handgun were recovered at the scene.

Officers are searching for the three men in the white car. It is unclear if they were injured during the shootout . . .

The robbery victim was not injured. He initially left the scene but returned later, according to authorities. . . .

“That man was actually being a good citizen trying to help the other citizen that was being robbed,” Capt. Brian Schiffbauer said. . . .

During the altercation, a shootout ensued and the bystander was shot five times. Police say more than 20 rounds were fired and the victim suffered gunshot wounds to the rear end and his right side. He was transported to Grady in stable condition.

Both the AK-47 and a handgun were recovered at the scene. Atlanta Police are searching for three suspects at this time.

Rosalie Little lives around the corner and visits the store often. She is applauding the man who intervened, calling him a good Samaritan.

"I praise the man. I'm sorry he got shot and I pray for him and his family but like I said its nice to know its some good Samaritans still out here willing to put their lives on the line for us," she said.

FBI: Customer fired at LANB bank robber
By Wren Propp

Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 12:29 pm (Updated: November 22, 12:39 pm)

The FBI confirmed Wednesday that a bank customer shot at a suspected bank robber on Tuesday outside the Los Alamos National Bank branch in White Rock.

Further information regarding the customer wasn’t made available.

Several witnesses reported hearing shots a bit before noon on Tuesday. An armed man dressed in all black, with his face covered, reportedly held up the bank and received an undisclosed amount of money.

Herman Manzanares, owner of Herman’s Auto next door to the bank in White Rock, said he and his employees heard the shots.

“We saw the guy run around to Rover and we saw the man who shot at him go back into the bank. We called 911 and so did the bank,” Manzanares said.

A few minutes later police arrived; traffic snarled as heavily armed police sought the suspect.

The small town – a bedroom community for nearby Los Alamos – shut down with residents asked to stay inside and school children locked inside their schools.

“It was just chaos,” Manzanares said.

Also Wednesday, the Los Alamos Police Department announced they are asking anyone in White Rock who may have any video or image surveillance – from anywhere in town – to contact them immediately.

“LAPD criminal investigators would like to receive a copy of the footage as soon as possible,” according to the press release.

Please contact Det. Joey Robinson at 505-662-8274 or email joseph.robinson@lacnm.us.

The FBI is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the robbery suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 505-889-1300. Tips can also be submitted online at tips.fbi.gov.

Sheriff: Botched robbery led to La Grange shooting; armed suspect among those killedPosted November 13, 2017
Updated December 8, 2017

LA GRANGE, N.C. — One of three people killed early Sunday in a shooting in rural Lenoir County was a masked man trying to rob a group of people, authorities said Monday.

A group had gathered in an outbuilding at 308 W. Queen St. in La Grange to play cards when a "botched robbery" occurred at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday, Lenoir County Sheriff Ronnie Ingram said.

"We are still working to find out if a struggle occurred or if the robbers just came in shooting," Ingram said in a statement.

One of the suspected robbers was identified as Jerrell Marquez Pridgen of Goldsboro, who was found dead at the scene.

"We do know for sure that Pridgen was one of the suspects at the scene along with some others, and their intention was robbing someone. He was armed with a gun, had something covering his face and demanded money from the victims," Ingram said.

Investigators are trying to determine who else was involved in the attempted robbery.

In addition to Pridgen, John Wesley Johnson Jr. of Sumter, S.C., and Roderick Wayne Gillette of La Grange were killed. Johnson was visiting family and was "in control of the property" where the shooting occurred, Ingram said.

A third man at the card game was wounded. Authorities haven't released his name.

La Grange is so remote that deputies on patrol actually heard the gunfire and were headed to West Queen Street when someone called 911 to report the shooting, the sheriff said.

Lenoir County Crime Stoppers has offered a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the others involved in the robbery. Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 252-523-4444.
