Re. Jean; off topic (I thank you regulars for indulging me!):

All, I've usually refrained from referencing the names of posters I disagree with; enjoying the give-and-take in the marketplace of ideas is more my style.

However, 2 of the most recent posts from one "Jean Sutherland" really rub me the wrong way. Do they to anyone else? Here they are, reprinted in their entirety (with my comments following each one):

1. Post 24851:
<IT'S simple, MARTIN, a corporation list all their business phone numbers, with 1888-TALK-AOL and everycall cost $.09 per minute,yes the corporation needs an AOL membership for $19.95 per month. Every corporation in America can take this simple step TODAY and pay only$.09 per minute for long distance service. How much do you think FTEL will be able to charge per minute? When do you think they will be able to offer service,1999?2000? Shalom>

As the contents of this first post have already been effectively dealt with elsewhere (thanks to Seth and Sammy, and perhaps to others who may have replied since I started composing this post), I'll refrain from commenting on the particulars. However, Jean's signoff "shalom" did interest me, as I often use this in correspondence myself (including sometimes here on the FTEL thread).

Since "shalom" is most commonly used as a friendly, sincere term meaning "peace to you" (although, like many Hebrew words, "shalom" can signify other things as well--depending on the context), I was immediately taken aback. Why? Because so many of Jean's prior posts have seemed to me so insincere, so angry and so manipulative...normally these kinds of people wouldn't use the term "shalom" unless they're being sarcastic in their use of the word. Could it be? Nah...

2. Post 24822:
<got a life&it's Fine,thank g-d it's not jan SHALOM>

Admittedly, Jean is here responding to what could be considered a somewhat disparaging post from Seth. Still, why this reference to Jan Fine? Also, why include in such a caustic response the name of G-d? And, of course, we again notice the by-now clearly sarcastic use of "shalom" again.

Do we really need this stuff on this thread? While I'm certainly not "holier-than-thou" and will quickly admit to as many human foibles and faults as the next person, this was just too much for me to see remain unanswered.

And now back to FTEL. As I've previously stated, I'll go back to lurking, while offering a few FTEL posts from time to time (none of this stuff anymore). Again, I thank all you regulars for indulging me; this will be my only comment re. "Jean Sutherland." Anyone can email me privately if you wish.
