Bruce, just got back from Thailand (9 days in the sun down around Phuket.) Asia is in melt down mode again. The big news here is that Peregrin Investments is probably going under, with implications for the rest of the investment banking sector. It seems (and this is from a colleague here) that Peregrin took a GIGANTIC position in an Indonesian Taxi company that went belly up, and it will take Peregrin down with it. The Hang Seng is off 773 for the day (- 8.7%). More troubling to my mind is that the Nikkei is down another 330 points and now only a 100 points and change above 14,500. I think 14,000 is a real break point for the Japanese economy, ie a point at which Japanese consumer confidence may begin to really erode with a possible looming crisis in the form of a nation-wide banking panic. Then all bets are off.
Also, Singapore's index is off 111 points (-9.44%). For those in semi land, the ONLY SE Asian player that's weathering the storm even moderately well is Taiwan (which according to the latest daily note in Infrastructure MAY be able to maintain an accelerated level of cap. equipment expenditures.) I would be willing to bet that Wall Street will hold off on a rally in semi stocks until the Nikkei stabalizes. Semi analysts are looking for a LOT of order pushouts for the next couple of quarters. It will be real interesting to see what happens at Cymer's next earnings announcement. What is the exact date for it?
(Jan. 21 seems to stick in my mind.)
